Abstract

Abstract A low profile inflation valve includes a first tube having a lumen and at least one region of decreased inner diameter, and a structure, which may be a tube, movably located inside the lumen. The region of decreased inner diameter of the first tube forms a seal with a portion of the structure. A method of making a low profile inflation valve using a first tube and second tube comprises the steps of creating an aperture in at least one side of the second tube; placing the second tube inside the first tube, the first tube being made of thermoplastic material; applying heat to a localized area of the first tube; and compressing the first tube to form a region of reduced internal diameter, the reduced diameter forming a seal with the outside diameter of the second tube.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 154 words
A low profile inflation valve comprising: a) a first tube comprising a wall material and having a lumen; said first tube also comprising at least one region of a first length with a decreased inner diameter, the region of decreased inner diameter being formed of the same material as, and being a monolithic part of, the wall material of the first tube; and b) a second tube slidably engaged within the lumen of said first tube, said second tube having a lumen, said second tube extending distally past said region of decreased inner diameter of said first tube, said second tube also having at least one aperture allowing passage of fluid from the lumen of the second tube to the lumen of the first tube when said valve is open, said at least one aperture being blocked when said valve is closed; c) the valve having an outer profile not exceeding about 0.3 cm.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 154 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 210 words
A combined balloon catheter and low profile inflation valve comprising: a) a balloon catheter having a longitudinally extending, non-branching shaft including a proximal end and a distal end with an inflatable balloon adjacent the distal end and an internal surface defining an inflation lumen between the proximal end and the distal end, the lumen being in fluid communication with the balloon such that fluid forced into the distal end of the lumen inflates the balloon; b) a structure disposed at the proximal end of the non-branching shaft and located within the inflation lumen slideable between an open position and a closed position, the structure being configured to cooperate with the internal surface of the lumen to allow fluid from outside of the catheter to flow through an aperture into the lumen when the structure is in said open position and to block fluid from flowing through the aperture when the structure is in said closed position; and c) a control device outside of the lumen and connected to said structure by which an operator controls the position of the structure within the lumen, the control device and structure being sized such that a user may maintain the balloon in an inflated state and exchange other medical apparatus over the catheter.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The combined balloon catheter and low profile inflation valve of claim 2 further comprising a stop limiting the distance of proximal travel of the structure.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The combined balloon catheter and low profile inflation valve of claim 2 wherein said control device has a larger diameter than said structure located inside the inflation lumen.
