Abstract

Abstract A gradient index optical element comprises a component capable of absorbing light unnecessary for image formation and observation. The optical element is made according to a solgel process wherein a gradient index glass or plastic body is initially made and then incorporated with a light-absorbing component such as CuO and FeO that absorbs unnecessary light. The optical element has a filter function for eliminating light unnecessary for image formation and observation. A lens system having a reduced number of optical elements is realized.
