Claim 1
Independent Claim
143 words
A variable length cross-link device for use with orthopaedic rod apparatuses having a plurality of rods, comprising: a first element having first and second ends and means by which said first end is coupleable to a first rod, said second end comprising a shaft; a second element having first and second ends and means by which said first end is coupleable to a second rod, said second end comprising a tubular bore extending axially therewith for slidably receiving said second end of said first element, said bore having a selectively contractible opening and a tapered threading on an exterior surface thereof; and a nut which is advanceable along said tapered threading for securing said shaft in said tubular bore by causing an inner surface of said tubular bore at said contractible opening to crush lock to said second end of said first element.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
55 words
The cross-link device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said tubular bore comprises at least one slot extending axially therealong from said contractible opening, and wherein said nut for securing said shaft in said tubular bore comprises means for applying a radially inward force and thereby causing the at least one slot to narrow.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
25 words
The cross-link device as set forth in claim 2, wherein an outer surface of said second end of said first element comprises a roughened surface.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
17 words
The cross-link device as set forth in claim 3, wherein said roughened surface comprises a diamond knurl.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The cross-link device as set forth in claim 2, wherein said inner surface of said tubular bore comprises a roughened surface.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
17 words
The cross-link device as set forth in claim 5, wherein said roughened surface comprises a diamond knurl.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
172 words
A cross-linked dual rod orthopaedic implant apparatus comprising: a pair of rods disposed in a substantially parallel orientation; means for fixing said rods to a posterior surface of a spinal column; at least one variable length cross-link device for coupling said pair of rods, comprising; a first element having first and second ends and means by which said first end is coupleable to a first rod, said second end comprising a shaft, a second element having first and second ends and means by which said first end is coupleable to a second rod, said second end comprising a tubular bore extending axially therewith for slidably receiving said second end of said first element, said bore having a selectively contractible opening and a tapered threading disposed on an exterior surface thereof, and a nut which is advanceable along said tapered threading for securing said shaft in said tubular bore by causing an inner surface of said tubular bore at said contractible opening to crush lock to said second end of said first element.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim

Claim 10
Dependent Claim
54 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein said tubular bore comprises at least one slot extending axially therealong from said contractible opening, and wherein said nut for securing said shaft in said tubular bore comprises means for applying a radially inward force and thereby causing the at least one slot to narrow.
