Abstract

Abstract Body lumens such as blood vessels are selectively occluded by mechanically collapsing the blood vessel and subsequently applying energy or other occlusive conditions within or adjacent the collapsed region. For example, vessel collapsing mechanisms can include spreadable opposed elements, reciprocating jaw mechanisms having penetrating elements, and devices for applying negative pressure to collapse the blood vessel. One or more electrodes can be used in a monopolar or bipolar fashion to apply radiofrequency or other energy to the body lumen in the region where it has been collapsed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 20
Claim 1
Independent Claim 76 words
A method for occluding a body lumen, said method comprising: applying from within the lumen a force to draw opposed portions of the inner lumen wall at least partially together over an occlusion region, wherein said opposed portions are disposed across the lumen from each other; and injuring opposed portions of the inner wall while they are held together by the applied force, wherein the injured region heals to form an occlusion blocking the body lumen.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 76 words
A method for occluding a body lumen, said method comprising: applying from within the lumen a force to draw opposed portions of the inner lumen wall at least partially together over an occlusion region, wherein said opposed portions are disposed across the lumen from each other; and injuring opposed portions of the inner wall while they are held together by the applied force, wherein the injured region heals to form an occlusion blocking the body lumen.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as in claim 1, wherein the injuring step comprises initiating a radiofrequency current flow through the occlusion region.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 114 words
A method for occluding a body lumen, said method comprising: advancing a probe through the lumen to a target site; applying a force through the probe to draw opposed portions of the inner lumen wall together over an occlusion region, wherein the opposed portions lie across the lumen from each other; engaging at least one electrode on the probe against the lumen wall in or near the occlusion region; and initiating a radiofrequency current flow from the probe through the lumen wall at the occlusion region, wherein the current flow causes injury to the inner lumen wall in the occlusion region, wherein the injured region heals to form an occlusion blocking the body lumen.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the body lumen is a blood vessel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method as in claim 4, further comprising percutaneously introducing the probe to the blood vessel.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 35 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the force applying step comprises penetrating opposed elements from the probe into the opposed wall portions and closing the opposed elements to draw the opposed wall portions together.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as in claim 6, wherein the opposed elements are electrodes and wherein the current initiating step comprises flowing current between the electrodes.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the force applying step comprises spreading opposed elements on the probe to close the lumen along a transverse line defined by said elements.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 36 words
A method as in claim 8, wherein the engaging step comprises engaging a pair of electrodes on the probe against the opposed wall portions and wherein the current initiating step comprises flowing current between said electrodes.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 44 words
A method as in claim 8, wherein the engaging step comprises engaging a single electrode on the probe against the occlusion region and wherein the current initiating step comprises flowing current between the electrode and a dispersive electrode located remotely from the single electrode.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 38 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the force applying step comprises blocking the lumen adjacent to the target site and drawing a negative pressure through the probe to collapse the wall portions together over the occlusion region.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method as in claim 11, wherein the blocking step comprises inflating a balloon on the probe.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 44 words
A method as in claim 11, wherein the engaging step comprises engaging a single electrode on the probe against the occlusion region and wherein the current initiating step comprises flowing current between the electrode and a dispersive electrode located remotely from the single electrode.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 36 words
A method as in claim 11, wherein the engaging step comprises engaging a pair of electrodes on the probe against the opposed wall portions and wherein the current initiating step comprises flowing current between said electrodes.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the current flow is at a frequency in the range from 200 kHz to 1.25 MHz.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the current flow is in the range from 50 mA to 1 A.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as in claim 3, wherein the current flow is applied for a time in the range from 5 seconds to 4 minutes.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as in claim 3, further comprising confirming effect of the occlusion region after applying the force and prior to initiating radiofrequency current flow.
