Abstract
Abstract A retroreflective material providing a visual coloration includes a body member with microprisms on its rear surface. Some of the microprisms have a retroreflective interface and the remainder have a colored non-reflective coating thereon. As a result, light rays entering the front face which impinge upon the prisms with the retroreflective interface are redirected so that they exit the material in a parallel path. Light rays which travel to the color coated prisms are refracted from those prisms and impart a visual coloration to the material in daylight and ambient light.

In a retroreflective material, the combination comprising: (a) a body member of transparent synthetic resin having a first planar face and a second face with closely spaced microprisms thereover; (b) means providing a reflective interface for said microprisms in a pattern over the expanse of said second face; (c) a colored non-reflective coating on the surfaces of said microprisms between those in said pattern, said microprisms with said reflective interface comprising 40-85 percent of the total surface area of said second face, whereby light rays impinging on said first planar face and thereafter impinging upon said reflective interfaces of said microprisms are retroreflected thereby in the direction from which they came and those impinging upon said coated microprisms are refracted therefrom with the coloration thereof in daylight and in diffuse light.

The retroreflective material in accordance with claim 1 wherein said body member has a reflective metallic layer on the uncoated microprisms to provide the reflective interface.
