Claim 1
Independent Claim
58 words
An implantable material comprising a substrate having a surface and a polyHEMA hydrogel applied to said surface which is chemically modified by means of hydrolytic etching by an acid in order to alter the condition of said surface form a non-adhesive state to an adhesive state and thereby promote the attachment and growth of cells to said surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
14 words
An implantable material according to claim 1 wherein the hydrogel is a synthetic hydrogel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
An implantable material according to claim 1 wherein said acid is sulphuric acid of strength 36N (98%).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
22 words
An implantable material according to claim 1 wherein said hydrolytic etching is carried out for a period of less than 15 seconds.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
74 words
A method of forming an implantable material comprising the steps of: (a) forming a substrate having a surface, (b) applying a polyHEMA hydrogel layer to the surface of the substrate, and (c) chemically modifying the polyHEMA hydrogel by means of hydrolytic etching by an acid in order to alter the condition of said surface from a non-adhesive state to an adhesive state and thereby promote the attachment and growth of cells to said surface.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
74 words
A method of forming an implantable material comprising the steps of: (a) forming a substrate having a surface, (b) applying a polyHEMA hydrogel layer to the surface of the substrate, and (c) chemically modifying the polyHEMA hydrogel by means of hydrolytic etching by an acid in order to alter the condition of said surface from a non-adhesive state to an adhesive state and thereby promote the attachment and growth of cells to said surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method according to claim 5 where hydrolytic etching by an acid utilizes sulphuric acid of a strength 36N (98%).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method according to claim 6 wherein said acid etching is performed for a period of less than 15 seconds.
