Abstract

Abstract A socket insert component (14) of an acetabular cup prosthesis (10) is held securely within its support shell (12) by a locking mechanism comprising a circumferential groove (28) in the shell concavity (18) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (24) of the concavity, a first circumferential rib (38) on the outer surface (32) of the insert congruent with the groove, and a second circumferential rib (40) on the outer surface (32) of the insert (14) parallel to and proximate the first rib (38), the first rib (38) snapping into the groove (28) and the second rib (40) being deformed and pressed against the concavity (18) when the insert (14) and shell (12) are assembled.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 171 words
An implantable bone prosthesis, which comprises: a first component for introduction into a bone cavity with a concavity having a longitudinal axis; a second component of deformable material having means for receiving an articulating member and an outer surface that nests within the concavity of the first component, and locking means for securely locking the second component within the first component, the locking means comprising a circumferential groove in the first component concavity lying in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the concavity, a first circumferential rib on the outer surface of the second component congruent with the groove in the concavity which snaps into the groove when the second component is fully inserted into the first component, and a second circumferential rib on the outer surface of the second component parallel to and proximate the first circumferential rib, the second rib being deformed and pressed against the concavity when the first and second components are assembled whereby both axial movement and rotational movement between the components are restricted.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 171 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
The prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the groove and ribs are circular.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the outer surface of the second component includes a substantially parallel groove on either side of each of the first and second ribs to improve the flexibility of the ribs.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
The prosthesis of claim 1 in the form of an acetabular cup wherein the first component is a support shell for introduction into an acetabulum and the second component is a socket insert for receiving a femoral head.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The prosthesis of claim 4 wherein the support shell is constructed of metal and the socket insert is constructed of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.
