An emulsion useful as a blood substitute containing a perfluorobicyclo compound capable of carrying oxygen, said emulsion comprising: 5-50% (w/v) of a perfluoroindolizine compound of the formula: ##STR105## in which the A ring, the B ring, or both are substituted with at least one C 1 to C 3 perfluoroalkyl group provided that the total number of carbon atoms in the perfluoroindolizine compound is from 8 to 12, as an oxygen-carrying component; - 5% (w/v) of an emulsifying agent, and a physiologically acceptable aqueous solution as the balance, the emulsion having a particle diameter of 0.3μ or less.
