Video image creation system which simulates drafting tool

Claim 2

A video image creation system comprising: drafting means operable by an operator to designate positions on a desired line in the image; means for providing shape signals relating to a patch of image points, said shape signals having different values to simulate the distribution of drafting medium produced by a notional drafting tool; a store for picture point signals having storage locations representing points of the image; processing means responsive to operation of said drafting means for producing for each designated position of group of image signals which are a function of said shape signals; means for storing said image signals at storage locations of said store determined by the designated position and by the position of the image points in said patch; and means for reading signals from said store to produce a sequence of signals adapted for the reproduction of the image.

Claim 3

A video image creation system according to claim 1, wherein said processing means is arranged to cause said image signals to be a function also of previously produced image signals for the same storage locations.

Claim 4

A video image creation system according to claim 2, wherein said processing means is arranged to cause each said image signal to comprise a proportion of a predetermined intensity or luminance value determined by the respective shape signal, and a complementary proportion of the previously produced image signal for the same storage location.

Claim 5

A video image creation system according to claim 1, wherein said processing means is arranged to cause each said image signal to be a function also of a neighbouring image signal of the same patch, to produce a smearing effect.

Claim 6

A video image creation system according to claim 1, wherein said drafting means is pressure sensitive and said processing means is arranged to cause said image signals to be a function of the pressure.

Claim 7

A video image creation system according to claim 1 in which said drafting means comprises a touch tablet, and a stylus movable by the operator with respect to the tablet to designate different positions thereon.

Claim 8

A video image creation system according to claim 6, in which said drafting means is such that signals are produced to designate successive positions of the stylus when it is moved relative to the tablet, and said processing means is arranged to produce groups of image signals in the intervals between successive designations, one group in each interval.

Claim 9

A video image creation system according to claim 6 in which a number of signals designating the same position of the stylus can be generated depending on the time for which the stylus remains at said position, and said processing means is arranged to produce a group of image signals for each designation of the same position.

Claim 10

A video image creation system according to claim 1 comprising means for selecting an intensity or luminance value, said processing means being arranged to cause said image signals to be a function of the selected intensity or luminance value.

Claim 11

A video image creation system according to claim 1 comprising means for selecting a color value, said processing means being arranged to cause said image signals to be a function of the selected color value.

Claim 12

A video image creation system according to claim 1 comprising a store for said shape signals.

Claim 13

A video image creation system according to claim 1 in which said shape signals have relatively high values in the region of the center of the patch and decline in value towards the edge thereof.

Claim 14

A video image creation system according to claim 12, wherein said values define a peak in the region of the center.

Claim 15

A video image creation system according to claim 12, in which said values define a broad area in the region of the center.

Claim 16

A video image creation system according to claim 12, in which said values define a plurality of peaks in the region of the center.

Claim 17

A video image creation system according to claim 1 comprising means for storing different groups of shape signals adapted to simulate the distribution of drafting medium produced by different notional drafting tools, and means for selecting a desired group for use for a particular drafting operation.

Claim 18

A video image creation system according to claim 1 in which said processing means is arranged to read from said store for picture point signals, any signals stored in said store resulting from a previous designation of a particular position and to generate the respective group of image signals as a function not only of said shape signals but also as a function of the signals read from said store, the resultant image signals being stored in the storage locations from which the previous signals were read.

Claim 19

A video image creation system comprising: drafting means operable by an operator to designate points on a desired image; means for producing first signals representing a characteristic to be imparted to the image at said points; a store having storage locations corresponding to points on the image; processing means for producing for each point designated by said drafting means a new image signal which is a function of said first signal and of a previous image signal for the same point; means for storing the new image signal at the location in said store corresponding to the respective point; and means for reading image signals from said store to produce an image corresponding to the stored signals; said drafting means comprising a touch tablet and a stylus; said means for producing first signals comprising means for producing signals representing the point on the touch tablet touched by the stylus to designate points on the desired image, and further means are provided for causing said processing means to produce for each point designated by the drafting means a series of new image signals related in number to the time for which the stylus continues to touch a particular point on the tablet.

Claim 20

A video image creation system comprising: drafting means operable by an operator to designate points on a desired image; means for producing first signals representing a characteristic to be imparted to the image at said points; a store having storage locations corresponding to points on the image; processing means for producing for each point designated by said drafting means a new image signal which is a function of said first signal and of a previous image signal for the same point; means for storing the new image signal at the location in said store corresponding to the respective point; and means for reading image signals from said store to produce an image corresponding to the stored signals; said drafting means comprising a touch tablet and a stylus; said means for producing first signals comprising means for producing signals representing the point on the touch tablet touched by the stylus to designate points on the desired image, and further means are provided for causing said processing means to produce for each point designated by the drafting means a series of new image signals related in number to the time for which the stylus continues to touch a particular point on the tablet.

Claim 21

A video creation system comprising: drafting means operable by an operator to designate a series of points on a line of a desired image; means for producing for each point designated by said drafting means a plurality of first signals representing a characteristic to be imparted to the image at a plurality of image points defining a patch of image points; a store having storage locations corresponding to the points on the image; processing means for producing for each image point in the patch a new image signal which is a function of the respective first signal and of a previous image signal stored at the location in said store corresponding to the respective image point, said location being determined by the point designated by the drafting means and by the position of the image point in the patch; means for storing the new image signals at the said store; and means for reading signals from said store for producing an image signal corresponding to the stored image signals; said processing means is arranged to cause said new image signal to be a different function of the respective first signal for different image points in the patch so as to simulate the distribution of drafting medium produced by the notional drafting tool; means for storing a plurality of shape signals representing the distribution ability of each of a plurality of notional drafting tools, and means for selecting one of said pluralities of said shape signals, said processing means being responsive to the selected shape signals to determine the functional relationship between the first signals on the one hand and the previous image signal on the other.

Claim 22

A video creation system comprising: drafting means operable by an operator to designate a series of points on a line of a desired image; means for producing for each point designated by said drafting means a plurality of first signals representing a characteristic to be imparted to the image at a plurality of image points defining a patch of image points; a store having storage locations corresponding to the points on the image; processing means for producing for each image point in the patch a new image signal which is a function of the respective first signal and of a previous image signal stored at the location in said store corresponding to the respective image point, said location being determined by the point designated by the drafting means and by the position of the image point in the patch; means for storing the new image signals at the said store; and means for reading signals from said store for producing an image signal corresponding to the stored image signals; said processing means is arranged to cause said new image signal to be a different function of the respective first signal for different image points in the patch so as to simulate the distribution of drafting medium produced by the notional drafting tool; means for storing a plurality of shape signals representing the distribution ability of each of a plurality of notional drafting tools, and means for selecting one of said pluralities of said shape signals, said processing means being responsive to the selected shape signals to determine the functional relationship between the first signals on the one hand and the previous image signal on the other.
