Abstract

Abstract A three beam laser optical system comprising a writing beam and two reading beams all incident on the same track of a rotating disk optical recording medium. One of the reading beams is incident on the track ahead of the writing beam so as to serve as a read-before-write beam, while the other reading beam is incident on the track behind the recording beam so as to serve as a read-after-write beam. The read-before-write beam is used during the recording of data to provide an advance indication as to whether there is previously recorded data ahead of the writing beam, in which case the recording operation is interrupted to prevent an overwrite error. The read-after-write beam is used during recording to check the accuracy of the recording operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 193 words
In an optical recording and reproducing system, the combination comprising: an optical recording medium having at least one track; recording means including an optical recording radiation beam for recording optical holes in a predetermined arrangement in a track of said recording medium; reading means including at least one optical reading radiation beam for reading optical holes in a track of said recording medium, said reading beam having an intensity such that the beam will not disturb the integrity of previously recorded optical holes; and means providing for relative movement of said beams along said track; said beams being provided in a manner such that said recording beam traverses the same portions of said medium as said reading beam during said relative movement so that the reflected reading beam is able to provide an advance indication of the suitability of the track for recording by said recording beam; and means responsive to the reflected reading beam and operative during recording by said recording beam for detecting whether previously recorded optical holes are present ahead of said recording beam and if so for preventing said recording beam from recording over said previously recorded optical holes.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 193 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, wherein said reading means includes means responsive to the determination of the presence of previously optical holes on a track ahead of said recording beam for interrupting recording.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 99 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, wherein said reading means also includes a second reading radiation beam relatively movable along with said writing beam and the first mentioned reading beam and having an intensity which likewise will not disturb the integrity of previously recorded optical holes, said second reading beam being incident on the same track as said recording beam and the first mentioned reading beam and being incident at a location on the track behind said recording beam so as to be able to read the optical holes recorded by said recording beam shortly after recording thereby.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 66 words
The invention in accordance with claim 3, wherein said reading means includes means responsive to the reflected second reading beam and operative during recording on a track of said disk for reading optical holes written by said recording beam and for determining whether there is correct correspondence between the optical holes being recorded by said recording beam and those being read by said second reading beam.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
The invention in accordance with claim 4, wherein said reading means includes means for interrupting recording by said recording means if correct correspondence is not obtained between the optical holes recorded by said recording beam and those read by said second reading beam.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, wherein said beams are laser beams focused on said medium.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
The invention in accordance with claim 6, wherein said optical recording medium is an optical disk, and wherein said means providing for relative movement comprises means for rotating said disk relative to said beams.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 44 words
The invention in accordance with claim 7, wherein said disk includes a plurality of radially spaced generally circumferential tracks, and wherein said system includes track selecting means for radially moving said beams relative to said disk for positioning said beams on a selected track.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 57 words
The invention in accordance with claim 8, wherein a track includes a plurality of headers spaced around the track circumference, each header containing a predetermined arrangement of optical holes, and wherein said reading means includes means for deriving signals in response to the reflected beam obtained when at least one of said reading beams traverses a header.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 25 words
The invention in accordance with claim 9, wherein each header includes at least one optical hole for use in deriving timing signals for said system.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 58 words
The invention in accordance with claim 9, wherein each header includes a plurality of track following optical holes disposed relative to the center line of the track so that traversal thereof by a reading beam produces a reflected read beam which will vary in a manner dependent on the accuracy of positioning of said beams on the track.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 32 words
The invention in accordance with claim 11, wherein said track following optical holes comprise a plurality of optical holes disposed on opposite sides of the track center line in a staggered relationship.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 54 words
The invention in accordance with claim 12, including means responsive to the reflected reading beam obtained when a reading beam traverses said track following optical holes for deriving a track following signal which when applied to said track selection means will act to maintain said beams on the center line of a selected track.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 47 words
The invention in accordance with claim 9, wherein said header includes a plurality of focusing holes arranged in a pattern so that traversal thereof by a reading beam produces a reflected read beam which is indicative of the accuracy of focusing of said beams on the track.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 40 words
The invention in accordance with claim 14, wherein said focusing holes have a diameter and spacing chosen so that a reflected reading beam will have a peak intensity dependent upon the focusing of said beams on the track being traversed.
