Abstract
Abstract Methods of making network structures include forming on one side of a sheet of thermoplastic polymer a plurality of parallel continuous main ribs and forming on the other side of the sheet in a different direction a plurality of parallel discontinuous tie ribs. The tie ribs are discontinuous in the areas where they cross over the main ribs to eliminate any increased thickness at the cross-over points of the main ribs and tie ribs. The ribbed sheet thus formed is drawn in either one direction or in two preferably perpendicular directions to open the sheet into a network structure and to orient the main ribs and preferably also to orient the tie ribs.

A method of making a woven fabric comprising: providing an open network having a plurality of parallel continuous uniaxially oriented longitudinal main filaments uniformly interconnected in spaced relationship by a plurality of transverse discontinuous parallel tie filaments which have no substantial portion thereof crossing over the main filaments, each of said tie filaments between each pair of adjacent main filaments having its longitudinal axis in axial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the adjacent tie filament; separating the main filaments into tapes each hving two or more main filaments interconnected by tie filaments and having portions of tie filaments protruding from the edges of the tapes; and weaving said tapes into a fabric.

Dependent Claim
101 words
A woven fabric comprising a plurality of tapes each tape having two or more parallel continuous uniaxially oriented main filaments interconnected in a predetermined uniform spaced relationship by a plurality of transverse discontinuous parallel tie filaments, no substantial portion of which crosses over the main filaments, each of said tie filaments between each pair of adjacent main filaments having its longitudinal axis in axial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the adjacent tie filament, and each tape having portions of tie filaments protruding from the edges thereof, said tapes being woven together to provide a woven fabric having a predetermined porosity.
