Claim 1
Independent Claim
151 words
A balloon catheter comprising; two concentric tubes with distal and proximal ends and with the inner tube being spaced from the inner wall of the outer tube, one of the tubes having its distal end extending beyond the distal end of the other tube and the tubes being axially displaceable with respect to one another, an inflatable balloon with one end thereof mounted on the distal end portion of one of the tubes and its other end mounted on the distal end portion of the other of the tubes so as to seal the balloon from the exterior of the tubes, one of the tubes being open at both ends to permit access therethrough from end to end and the other tube having its distal end in communication with the interior of the balloon and its proximal end adapted to be connected to a source of fluid for expanding the balloon.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
42 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the inner tube is longer than the outer tube whereupon axial displacement affects the shape of the balloon by varying the distance between the points of connection of the balloon with the two tubes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
75 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein one end of the balloon is sealingly engaged with the outer surface of the distal end of the inner tube and the other end of the balloon is sealingly engaged with the distal end of the outer tube whereupon communication with the interior of the balloon is restricted to the passageway between the outer surface of the inner tube and the inner surface of the outer tube.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
43 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein there are more than two concentric tubes and the balloon is attached at one end to at least one of the tubes and at the other end to at least one of the other tubes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
23 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the source of fluid for expanding the balloon is a source of gas under pressure.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
23 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the source of fluid for expanding the balloon is a source of liquid under pressure.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein a transducer is attached to the distal portion of the catheter.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
58 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the catheter is utilized in diagnostic procedures involving the right heart with the lumen of the inner tube forming a passageway from outside the body to a predetermined position in the heart whereby a system of specialized probe-like instruments can be passed through the lumen to determine the conditions therein.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
196 words
The invention in accordance with claim 1 wherein the catheter is adapted for use in determining cardiac output by means of thermodilution principles with the inner tube adapted to be introduced into or in close proximity to the right heart, a small balloon tip catheter is insertable through the central lumen of the inner tube with the balloon of the small catheter uninflated whereupon inflatation of the small catheter balloon after passage out of the lumen of the inner tube will permit the balloon to be flowed directed from the inner tube into the heart, a thermistor is attached to the small balloon catheter proximally to the balloon thereon, the small balloon catheter having a central lumen in communication with the balloon thereon to effect its inflatation and deflatation, the balloon being sealingly attached to the distal end of the small catheter, the tubes and inner small balloon tip catheter being arranged so that when a fluid different in temperature from the bloodstream is injected into the annular space between the lumen of the inner tube and the small balloon tip catheter, the thermistor on the small balloon catheter will detect temperature changes in the bloodstream.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
40 words
The invention in accordance with claim 9 wherein a second thermistor is attached to the distal end of the inner tube to facilitate accurate measurement of the temperature of the injectate at the exact moment it mixes with the bloodstream.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
192 words
A method of forming a catheter assembly for introduction into the vessel of a patient comprising; placing two tubes in concentric relationship with respect to one another with each tube having a distal and a proximal end, providing the inner tube with an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the outer tube so that the tubes are axially displaceable with respect to one another, extending the distal end of one of the tubes beyond the distal end of the other tube, mounting an inflatable catheter assembly balloon with one end mounted on the distal end portion of one of the tubes and the other end mounted on the distal end portion of the other of the tube so as to seal the catheter assembly balloon from the exterior of the tubes, providing openings at both ends of one of the tubes to permit access therethrough from end to end, locating the distal end of the other tube so that it is in communication with the interior of the catheter assembly balloon and adapting its proximal end to be connected to a source of fluid for expanding the catheter assembly balloon.
