Abstract
Abstract A process for sealing an open end of a hollow, cylindrical, thermoplastic tube comprising: A. PROVIDING A CIRCUMFERENTIAL BEVELED EDGE ON THE OPEN END OF THE TUBE, B. RAPIDLY HEATING THE BEVELED OPEN END OF THE TUBE TO ITS MELTING TEMPERATURE, C. PRESSING THE BEVELED OPEN END OF THE TUBE INTO A MOLD TO FORCE THE BEVELED EDGES TOGETHER AND SEAL THE OPEN END, AND D. RAPIDLY COOLING THE SEALED TUBE. Polyethylene terephthalate tubes sealed by the process have particular utility as preforms in the blow-molding of containers.
