Abstract

Abstract In geophysical prospecting where earth vibrators are used to inject seismic wave trains into the earth, electrical and mechanical malfunctions sometimes cause the vibrators to inject signals which substantially differ from a common electrical pilot signal. When these signals differ the seismic data are distorted during the cross correlation process and where multiple vibrators are employed this difference causes a loss of synchronization so that destructive interference occurs seriously degrading the seismic information. This problem is solved by a novel test apparatus which permits routine comparison of the injected and pilot signals of each vibrator. When by use of the test displays the equipment operator observes that the injected signal produced by his vibrator differs from the pilot signal in an amount indicating faulty vibrator performance, he can take remedial action while the vibrator continues in operation or can stop his vibrator and remove it for repair.
