Thermosetting coating compositions comprising methylolated amide interpolymers of high acid content in combination with low molecular weight polyhydric alcohols
Abstract
Abstract A thermosetting coating composition adapted to deposit coatings which cure on baking to provide a pencil hardness of 2H or harder, and which possess improved flexibility and impact resistance, comprising non-gelled interpolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising from 7-20% by weight of methylolated acrylamide, monoethylenic carboxylic acid in an amount to provide in the interpolymer a ratio of carboxyl to N-methylol functionality of from .5:1 to .9:1, and at least 50% by weight from the group of styrene, vinyl toluene and methyl methacrylate, in admixture with a polyhydric alcohol having a molecular weight of up to about 6,000, in an amount to provide a ratio of hydroxy to N-methylol functionality of from .06:1 to .6: 1.
