Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to apparatus for providing a controlled movement of an output member such as a stylus or a tool along a pair of coordinate axes. A pair of tracks are disposed in spaced relationship along one of the coordinate axes and a beam is disposed between the tracks in a direction transverse to the tracks. First means such as first motive means are disposed in spaced but contiguous relationship to the tracks to move along the tracks. The first means are coupled to the beam to maintain the beam in spaced but contiguous relationship to the tracks and to drive the beam along the tracks. Second means such as second motive means are disposed in spaced but contiguous relationship to the beam and are coupled to the beam to move along the beam. The second means are coupled to the output member to drive the output member.
