Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for use in artificial respiration comprising an elongated member designed to be inserted into the oesophagus and having an expandible inflatable element which can be operated externally after insertion in order to close the oesophagus to prevent inflation or aspiration of the stomach. The apparatus preferably includes a tubular airway in combination with the elongated member, with discharge openings to allow air to be introduced into the patient''s respiratory passages and lungs. The expandible element may be mechanically operated.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
A method for applying artificial respiration while permitting washing out, dosing or voiding the stomach, said method comprising, introducing into a patient''s oesophagus an elongated element having an expandible blocking means for blocking the oesophagus with a tube coextensive with said elongated element passing through said blocking means to the patient''s stomach and said elongated element having means for supplying air for resuscitation through said patient''s mouth to the respiratory passages of said patient, expanding said blocking means to block said oesophagus supplying air to said respiratory passages for resuscitation without passage of air to said stomach, washing out, dosing or voiding said stomach by means of said tube.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
A method in accordance with the method of claim 1 wherein said blocking means is expanded by gas inflation prior to said supplying step and is deflated by removal of said gas after said washing, dosing or voiding step.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 81 words
A method of applying artificial respiration, comprising introducing an expandible balloon element attached to an elongated member into a patient''s oesophagus through the patient''s mouth, inflating said element with a fluid by means of an externally operated remote actuator to cause it to expand to close and block the oesophagus passage short of the stomach, said elongated member carrying means for supplying air for resuscitatioN through the patient''s mouth to the respiratory passages, and passing air for resuscitation through said means.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 81 words
A method of applying artificial respiration, comprising introducing an expandible balloon element attached to an elongated member into a patient''s oesophagus through the patient''s mouth, inflating said element with a fluid by means of an externally operated remote actuator to cause it to expand to close and block the oesophagus passage short of the stomach, said elongated member carrying means for supplying air for resuscitatioN through the patient''s mouth to the respiratory passages, and passing air for resuscitation through said means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method in accordance with the method of claim 3 and further comprising said fluid being air and introducing a bite means along with said elongated member for preventing closure or damage of the elongated member by the patient''s teeth.
