Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to a log handling system for use in processing logs to be used in the paper pulp industry and in saw mill operations. More particularly, this invention includes a series of operable cutting means for cutting a log into a plurality of predetermined lengths. A log feeding means is operatively associated with the log cutting means for moving a log past the cutting means to effect the cutting operations. The log feeding means includes a ramp portion detailed for feeding logs by gravity to the log feeding means. The ramp portion includes a selectively movable section detailed for movement between a ramp log feeding position and an elevated position which will allow a log to be dropped onto a first conveying means for conveying selected logs away from the plurality of cutting means. The first conveyor means includes an operative stop means for stopping the selected logs at a predetermined location along the conveying route. A single operable cutting means is operatively associated with the first conveying means and located at a predetermined location away from the operative stop means and operable for cutting a log located on the first conveying means into a predetermined length for use in a saw mill operation. A pair of log ejecting means are operatively associated with the first conveying means for ejecting a log therefrom in selected opposite transverse directions. A second conveying means is supported on the system at a position below and adjacent the feeding means and has a plurality of cutting means for conveying the plurality of cut lengths of log away from the log handling system. Also, operatively associated with the plurality of cutting means is a collecting ramp for collecting the sawdust created in the cutting operation. The collecting ramp includes a third conveying means for conveying the collected sawdust away from the log handling system. The second conveying means used for moving the plurality of cut logs includes an adjustable end portion selectively movable in a vertical plane for depositing the length of cut logs on a collecting trolley at a plurality of vertically spaced positions.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 220 words
An improved log handling system for use in processing logs comprising in combination, a plurality of cutting means supported at predetermined spaced locations for severing a log at a plurality of spaced points, log feeding means for advancing a log past said plurality of cutting means simultaneously, whereby the log will be cut into a plurality of predetermined lengths, said feeding means including a plurality of rotatable log feeding elements arranged in pairs with one element of each pair located on each side of one of said cutting means, said log feeding elements being mounted for rotating about a common axis spaced below the operable cutting surface of said cutting means, each of said elements comprising radially extending arms, each arm including a log cavity portion adapted to engage and lift a log into engagement with said cutting means, said cavities extending inwardly to a point in proximity to said common axis, a downwardly inclined ramp surface so located relatively to said feeding means that a log will be moved by gravity into engagement with said log cavities, a pair of log supported located adjacent said ramp surface at points spaced longitudinally along said axis, and reciprocating means associated with each support and adapted to operate simultaneously to advance a log over said supports and onto said inclined ramp surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 220 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 102 words
A system as in claim 1 wherein each said reciprocating means comprises a pair of vertically oriented, spaced plate members and a plurality of indexing lugs pivotally mounted between said plate members each said lug including a log engaging portion adapted, when in upright position, to engage a log and feed it toward said ramp and, when in a horizontal position, to pass under said log, a stop member mounted adjacent each lug, and an abutment on each lug adapted to engage the corresponding stop member when said log engaging portion is in upright position and to hold it in such position.
