Abstract

Abstract Shaping, coating and tempering glass sheets in a continuous process comprising supporting a glass sheet in bending relation to a mold, heating the sheet in an enclosed atmosphere until it conforms to the mold, coating at least a surface of the bent sheet while so supported by applying a coating composition for a time sufficient to produce a coating thereon and while exposing its other surface to a cool atmosphere, discontinuing the coating before the glass temperature falls below the strain point, and then quenching both surfaces of the sheet rapidly with relatively cold tempering medium to impart at least a partial temper to the bent coated glass sheet before removing the sheet from the supporting mold. The temperature treatment can also simultaneously fuse a metalo-ceramic frit applied to a portion of the coated surface before said heating starts.
