Abstract

Abstract A fluffy, finely-divided fibrous collagen derived product having hemostatic and adhesive properties sufficient to join together severed biological surfaces in a live warm blooded animal when the product is wet with blood between the surfaces. In the preparation of the product, the swelling of the collagen fibers is controlled during wet processing to prevent hornification upon drying and the recovered dry fibrous product is subjected to a deaggregation treatment to provide a mass having a bulk density of not more than 8 pounds per cubic foot and a surface area of at least 1 square meter per gram.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 18 words
A dressing for a wound as defined in claim 1 whErein the fibrous mass consists essentially of collagen.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 23 words
A dressing for a wound as defined in claim 1 wherein the fibrous mass consists essentially of an ionizable partial salt of collagen.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A dressing for a wound as defined in claim 1 wherein the fibrous mass consists essentially of an ionizable partial acid salt of collagen containing from about 50 to about 90 percent of the stoichiometric amount of the ionizable acid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A dressing for a wound as defined in claim 1 wherein the fibrous mass consists essentially of an ionizable partial hydrogen chloride salt of collagen containing from about 50 to about 90 percent of the stoichiometric amount of hydrogen chloride.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 152 words
The method of joining severed biological surfaces in a living warm blooded animal which comprises placing between and in contact with said surfaces a finely-divided fibrous mass consisting essentially of collagen or an ionizable partial salt of collagen, wetting the fibrous mass with blood and maintaining the surfaces in contact with the fibrous mass by pressure until hemostasis has been effected and then releasing the pressure, the fibrous mass having a bulk density below 8 pounds per cubic foot, having a surface area of at least 1 square meter per gram and having the property of combining with blood in a wound to form a mass that is self-adherent to the wound surfaces and thereby seal the wound and being further characterized in that when the fibrous mass is mixed with blood and the mixture incubated at 98*F. for 1 hour the mixture exhibits a HAT Test of not more than 1,500.
