Abstract

Abstract A purge and balancing valve having a valve body with a purge opening and a vane type valve member adapted to rotate in a balancing position between fully open and fully closed and when closed being adapted to move to a purging position where communication between the purge opening and one side of the valve is established. The valve is capable of purging in either direction and is designed to prevent inadvertent movement to the purging position.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 222 words
Combination purge and regulating valve compriSing: a. a valve body having an upper bore, a communicating and axially aligned lower bore and a purge opening in communication with said lower bore and a fluid inlet and fluid outlet in communication with said lower bore b. a valve member having a stem, an upper valve portion slidably fitting in said upper bore, a generally flat vane member slidably disposed in said lower bore, said vane having an enlarged portion extending outwardly from one side thereof which can slidably fit in said lower bore and a lower portion which slidably fits in said purge opening; c. said valve member being rotatably mounted within said valve body so as to be rotatable about its vertical axis in a regulating position with said lower portion in said purge opening to regulate the flow through said valve; d. said valve member movable within said lower bore to reciprocate between said regulating position and a purging position with said lower portion withdrawn from said purge opening when said vane is at right angles to the direction of flow of fluid through said fluid inlet, communication being established between said purge opening and the side of said valve opposite the side of said vane having said outwardly extending enlarged portion when said valve member is in the purging position.

Claim 5
Dependent Claim 58 words
Valve of claim 1 wherein said valve body has a washer mounted therein having a key slot in a central opening in which said stem slidably fits, said stem having key means which slidably fits in said key slot to permit said valve member to reciprocate when said vane is at right angles to the direction of flow.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
Valve of claim 2 wherein said washer is provided with means to limit the rotation of said valve member in the regulating position between fully open and fully closed and to prevent the inadvertent movement of the valve member to the purging position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
Valve of claim 2 wherein said stem is provided with a valve handle and spring means are disposed between said washer and said handle to cause said valve member to reciprocate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
Valve of claim 1 which includes means to indicate when said valve is in the purging or regulating mode.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
Valve of claim 1 wherein said valve member is movable about an axis to establish communication with said purge opening from either side of said valve thereby enabling said valve to purge in either direction.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 42 words
Valve of claim wherein said purge opening is connected to a purge conduit, which purge conduit is pivotally connected to said valve to discharge at any angle desired in its horizontal plane with respect to the direction of flow through said valve.
