Abstract A PERMANENT IMPLANT FOR BONE TISSUE WHICH HAS A DENSE CAST OR WROUGHT BASE PORTION OF HIGH STRENGTH METAL, AND A POROUS METAL LAYER OVERLYING AND BONDED TO THE BASE PORTION. THE POROUS LAYER IS THIN IN COMPARISON WITH THE THICKNESS OF THE BASE PORTION AND IS PREFERABLY PLASMA FLAME COATED ON THE BASE PORTION. THE SHAPE OF THE BASE PORTION DEPENDS UPON THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE BONE TISSUE IT IS TO REPLACE OR REPAIR. THE POROUS LAYER MAY COVER ONLY THAT PART OF THE SURFACE OF THE BASE PORTION WHICH IS TO BE IN CONTACT WITH THE BONE TISSUE AFTER IMPLATATION, AND PERMITS THE GROWTH OF BONE TISSUE INTO THE PORES.
