Abstract COLLAGEN IS CHEMICALLY MODIFIED BY TREATMENT WITH A STRONG ALKALI IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ALKALI METAL SALT CAPABLE OF PREVENTING SWELLING OF THE COLLAGEN. THE COLLAGEN IS THEN SWOLLEN AND FORMED INTO A DOUGH AND IS EXTRUDED INTO A PRECIPITATING BATH TO FORM A TUBULAR CASING, PARTICULARLY A SUSAGE CASING.
