Plastic tube heat exchanger with novel header construction
Abstract
Abstract 1,169,067. Tubular heat exchangers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 20 July, 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 33330/67. Heading F4S. A tubular heat exchanger comprises a cylindrical metallic casing 1, a bundle 60 of hollow tubular elements 61 of plastics material, the open end portions of which lie in a substantially coplanar arrangement and are sealed in fluidtight relationship with one another, and a header assembly co-operating with the open end portions of the tube bundle, comprising a first annular header member 30, formed of the same or similar material to that of the tubular elements, surrounding and secured to the bundle in sealing tight manner with such an annular clearance "A" remaining between said members 30 and the casing 1 that clearance will remain at the maximum operating temperature of the heat exchanger, a second metallic header member 20 abutting the first member 30 and held against axial movement in the casing by a shoulder 23, and a third member 40, also metallic, which abuts the opposite side of said first member and is also held against axial movement by an inwardly directed annular groove 11, a resilient sealing ring 51 forming an effective fluid tight seal between the first header member 30 and the casing member 1, a seal between the second member 20 and the casing being effected by either a ring (122, Fig. 3) or by a thread 29. The tubular elements 61 and the first member 30 are formed of an organic polymeric plastics composition, preferably a polyfluorinated plastic such as copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The tube bundle 60 is secured by helical spring-like elements 601 preferably of metallic composition, surrounding the tube bundle, and by a narrow elongated spacer strip 62 wound or interleaved between the tubular elements. In another embodiment (see Fig. 3, not shown) the spring 601 is replaced by a perforated sleeve (403) secured to the third header member, said sleeve supporting an annular baffle element 405 to control fluid flow in the casing member.
