Abstract

Abstract A prosthesis for repairing a tissue or muscle wall defect includes a plurality of petals connected to one another at a common center. The petals are arranged in circular fashion and cooperate to form a substantially flat disc. The petals are also arranged in an overlapping manner such that each of the petals is movable relative to an adjacent pair of the petals. The petals are sized and shaped such that at least some of the petals come in direct contact with a surrounding structure of a tissue defect when the prosthesis is inserted therein.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
1 . A prosthesis for repairing a tissue or muscle wall defect, comprising a plurality of petals connected to one another at a common center, said petals being arranged in circular fashion and cooperating so as to form a substantially flat disc, said petals being arranged in an overlapping manner such that each of said petals is movable relative to an adjacent pair of said petals, and said petals being sized and shaped such that at least some of said petals come in direct contact with a surrounding structure of a tissue defect when said disc is inserted therein.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 99 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
2 . The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein each of said petals is overlapped with an adjacent pair of said petals.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
3 . The prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein said petals are discrete members attached to one another at said common center.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
4 . The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein each of said petal has a sector shape and an end, said ends of said petals being attached to each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
5 . The prosthesis of claim 4 , wherein said petals are arranged in a spirally overlapping manner such that when said disc is inserted into a tissue defect, said petals forms a three-dimensional plug.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
6 . The prosthesis of claim 4 , wherein said petals are arranged in a spirally overlapping manner such that when said disc is inserted into a tissue defect, said petals can be unfolded so as to form a patch for repairing the tissue defect.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 33 words
7 . The prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein said petals are sized and shaped such that said disc is usable as a plug or as a patch for repairing a tissue defect.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 53 words
8 . The prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein at least some of said petals are formed integrally so as to form a first layer; and wherein at least some of said petals are formed integrally so as to form a second layer, said first and second layers cooperating to define said disc.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
9 . The prosthesis of claim 8 , wherein said first layer is laid on and attached to said second layer.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
10 . The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein said first layer and said second layer are oriented such that each of said petals of said first layer overlaps with an adjacent pair of said petals of said second layer.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
11 . The prosthesis of claim 10 , wherein said first and second layers form a first subassembly of petals.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 43 words
12 . The prosthesis of claim 11 , wherein at least some of said petals are formed integrally so as to form a third layer; and wherein at least some of said petals are formed integrally so as to form a fourth layer.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 21 words
13 . The prosthesis of claim 12 , wherein said third layer is laid on and attached to said fourth layer.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 40 words
14 . The prosthesis of claim 13 , wherein said third layer and said fourth layer are oriented such that each of said petals of said third layer overlaps with an adjacent pair of said petals of said fourth layer.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 20 words
15 . The prosthesis of claim 14 , wherein said third and fourth layers form a second subassembly of petals.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 38 words
16 . The prosthesis of claim 15 , wherein said first subassembly is laid on said second subassembly, said first and second subassemblies being attached to one another at said common center so as to define said disc.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 23 words
17 . The prosthesis of claim 16 , wherein each of said first, second, third and fourth layers has a clover leaf shape.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 15 words
18 . The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein said disc has a circular shape.
