Suppository composition and preparation thereof
Abstract
Abstract Sodium acid phosphate is heated, e.g. for 12 hours at 150 DEG C. or for 24 hours at 130 DEG C. to produce a "dehydrated sodium acid phosphate" by the reaction: <FORM:0917456/III/1> Analysis of the product indicates that it is an equilibrium mixture of sodium acid phosphate and anhydrous sodium pyrophosphate.ALSO:A suppository composition of low surface activity consists essentially of polyethylene glycol which is solid at normal temperatures (as carrier material), a salt of carbonic acid and an alkali metal acid phosphate or a dehydrated alkali metal acid phosphate or a salt of lactic, citric or tartaric acid. The suppository is preferably prepared by blending together two mixtures, one of which contains the carbonic acid salt and the carrier material and the other of which contains the carrier material and the phosphate or other reactive salt, whereby the particles of the two components of the CO2-producing couple are each enclosed in a protective film and are prevented from coming into contact until the carrier material dissolves. A preferred composition consists essentially of 15 to 44% polyethylene glycol 6000, 9 to 26% polyethylene glycol 1540, 6 to 17.4% polyethylene glycol 400, 7 to 38% sodium acid phosphate and 5 to 30% sodium bicarbonate.
