Abstract
Abstract 823,794. Stuffing-box substitutes; turbines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 7, 1957 [Aug. 17, 1956], No. 25182/56. Classes 110 (3) and 122 (5). A seal between the rotor 11 of a turbine and a volute 12<1>, 1211 mounted within a split stator housing 5<1>, 5<11>, comprises sealing rings 13 positioned between an extenson 11 of the rotor and the volute, the latter supporting the rings and being itself supported from the stator blading. The turbine shown comprises discs 1 bolted together in pairs and carrying rows of turbine blades 4, the two-part volute chamber 12<1>, 12<11> divided along planes 10, Fig. 2, and a two-part outer casing 8<1>, 8<11> enclosing both the volute chamber and the two-part stator casing 5<1>, 511 which is secured to the latter by bolts 23. The seal is provided between the tubular extension 11 of the rotor and the radially-inner walls of the volute chamber and as shown, is of the labyrinth type in which a pack of rings 13 is mounted in a two-part housing 14, 15, a spring 25 being provided to hold the rings together. This assembly is secured to the inner wall of the volute chamber by bolts 19, 21 passing through annular ribs 16, 18 on the housing part 14 and lugs 17<1>, 17<11> welded to the volute chamber. In a modification, the part 15 of the seal housing is replaced by a flat plate and the end wall of the part 14 is provided with pockets for the reception of springs which act upon the sealing rings 13 and are retained therein by a ring.
