Improvements in heat exchangers
Abstract
Abstract 818,174. Tubular heat exchangers. HUET, A. Feb. 13, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 4449/56. Class 64(3) In a heat exchanger comprising tubes each formed on its external surface with grooves i having a width and depth of the order of one to several millimetres, the grooves, in the case of longitudinally finned tubes such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, extend either circumferentially or helically between the bases of the fins d<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>2</SP>, and in the case of plain tubes such as shown in Figs. 4 and 6 extend along helicoidal lines with a progressively varying pitch from the front or leading face of each tube to the rear face of the tube. In Fig. 4 the grooves i extend over all the external tube surface. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the central portion of the leading face of the tube is smooth, the grooves commencing at the line L-L. Individual grooves may vary in depth and relatively deep grooves may alternate with shallower grooves. The deeper grooves may comprise separately formed ribs attached to the tubes. The cross-sectional form of the grooves is preferably triangular and the preferred depth is from one to two millimetres.
