Abstract

Abstract 801,251. Endless conveyers for sheet material. WEAN ENGINEERING CO., Inc. Aug. 29, 1955 (Feb. 9, 1955], No. 24710/55. Class 78 (1). [Also in Groups XVI, XIX and XL (b). Defects on sheet metal are recorded so that when after being cut into separate lengths the sheets reach a sorting position they are sorted according to whether or not a defect is registered. As shown (Fig. 1) the strip 1 under test passes a thickness gauge 2 and pinhole detector 3. The gauge and detector are connected to a magneto recording head 17 so that if the sheet is defective in either respect a signal is recorded on a magnet tape 14 driven at a speed proportional to that of the strip. The strip then passes to a flying shear 5 where it is cut into individual sheets. As the defect passes the shear a pick-up 18 detects the defect recorded on tape 18 and operates a relay which prepares a circuit so that subsequent closure of a switch 32 operated by the shear transfers the signal to a second recording head 28 which records it on a second magneto strip 27. The movement of this second strip is synchronized with conveyer 7 and recorded defects are detected by a detector 29 which operates through a solenoid a deflector 10 so that defective sheets leaving the conveyer pass to a pile 13. Whole sheets pass to a third conveyer 11 and are piled at 12. In a modification, Fig. 3, separate magnetic tracks are used by the thickness gauge and pinhole detector. Thus the thickness gauge controls a first deflector and the pinhole detector a second one while prime sheets pass to a final piler. In Fig. 4 is shown an arrangement in which defective sheets pass from conveyer 82 to conveyer 84 while a magnetic roll 85 leads prime sheets over deflector 83 to a third conveyer 87.
