Improvements in fastening means
Abstract
Abstract 788,742. Releasable fastenings. TAYLOR, E., and SHIPP, R. Nov. 14, 1955 [April 30, 1955], No. 12609/55. Class 44 [Also in Group XXXII] Fastening means for securing a decorative moulding or other embellishment 8 to a motor car body panel 1 comprises a circular aperture 2 in the panel, a channel 11 in the moulding or other embellishment, a rubber grommet 3 having a portion 9 engageable with the panel aperture and of slightly greater diameter so that the grommet portion is compressed when in the aperture, a stud 6 having a shank 10 with a base 7 at one end and a head 9 at the other end, the grommet having a through hole 4 to receive the head and shank and the relative dimensions of the hole, head and shank being such that the head expands the grommet on the opposite side of the panel to the base, the base being adapted to engage the channel in the moulding or other embellishment. As shown the shank of the stud is tapered and when it is inserted in the grommet it compresses the grommet in the aperture to make a watertight joint. The head is of half ball shape with a shoulder adjacent the shank and this shape prevents the stud being easily withdrawn from the grommet. In a modification the head is of ball shape so that it can be easily withdrawn. The grommet has a flange 12 which is placed between the panel 1 and the embellishment 8. The flange may be circular or square in shape.
