Pumps for metering liquids
Abstract
Abstract 767,524. Flexible-chamber pumps. KONTAK MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. April 15, 1955 [April 15, 1954; Jan 7, 1955, March 17, 1955], Nos. 11257/54, 621/55 and 7866/55. Class 102(1) In a liquid metering pump comprising a main pump member 23 giving alternatively a pressure and a suction stroke, and a flexible chamber 11 (the actuating chamber) to which and from which a liquid is delivered and withdrawn by said strokes of the main pump causing the actuating chamber to expand and contract a second flexible chamber (the delivery chamber 12) to which the pulsations of the actuating chamber are transmitted to cause expansion and contraction of the delivery chamber, the liquid to be pumped (from source 17) being drawn (through pipe 18 and valve 19) into the delivery chamber on its expansion and pumped therefrom (through valve 21 into pipe 22) on its contraction, on each stroke of the main pump liquid is drawn in to or expelled from the system constituted by the main and actuating pump chambers 16, H through valves 27, 28 in communication with the main pump chamber 16, one of which (27) will open to admit liquid on the suction stroke of the pump when a preselected position of the pump is reached (i.e. when piston 23 uncovers port 27b) and the other of which (28) will open to allow the escape of liquid on the pressure stroke of the pump when said pressure exceeds a preselected value which is reached at the mechanical limit of contraction of the delivery chamber 12, and means are provided for controlling the delivery of the liquid to be pumped by controlling directly or indirectly the working volume of the delivery chamber. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the flexible actuating and delivery chambers are each formed by a pair of diaphragms 11 and 12 respectively, and are mounted in a buffer chamber 10 which is filled with liquid and connected via a pipe 30 to the interior of a bellows 33. The working volume of the delivery chamber is altered by altering the volume of liquid in the buffer chamber and this is effected by adjusting a knob 45 to move a rod 37 to alter the capacity of the bellows 33. In another embodiment the flexible chambers are each formed by one separate diaphragm, and in a further embodiment the buffer chamber is dispensed with and the flexible chambers are on either side of a single diaphragm. In the latter embodiment the adjustable bellows is housed in the actuating chamber.
