Improvements in or relating to auto-transformers
Abstract
Abstract 744,485. Transformers; systems depending on the use of static transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and LAMBERT, R. A. April 8, 1954 [March 3, 1953], No. 5896/53. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). An auto-transformer for use with an alternating voltage source 6 which has an internal resistance equal to R comprises a pair of input terminals 13, 14 between which is connected the main winding 2, 3 of the auto-transformer 1, the resistance T of this winding being of the order of 3R, and a pair of output terminals 16, 17 connected to two points on the winding 2, 3 -as by tappings 7, 9-one or both of these points being variable; the arrangement being such that the resistance of the winding between the two points has a value of T-2R(I-X) where X is the ratio of the number of turns between the two points to the total number of turns in the winding. The main winding is preferably divided into the two parts 2, 3 in order that a resistor 4 may be connected therebetween in order to bring the resistance of the winding to 3R. An extension winding 11 may be connected to one end 5 of the main winding, tappings 12 being arranged about the end 5 to allow for control of the no-load voltage across the main winding. A tapped auxiliary winding 15 is provided when it is desired to use the autotransformer with a supply voltage other than that for which it was designed. The Specification contains a long theoretical discussion on the subject.
