Abstract
Abstract 735,628. Splicing bone fractures. CHARNLEY, J. June 1, 1954 [Dec. 9, 1953], No. 34227/53. Class 81 (2). A device for use in fractures of the femur comprises a housing for passing through the top of the femur in the direction of the head and an extension on the housing for securing to the femur remote from the fracture, the housing accommodating a screw which screws into the head and being counterbored to accommodate a spring engaging the housing and a nut on the screw so as to urge the head and shaft together. A housing 10 comprising a cup-like portion 15 and a narrower portion 16 is inserted in the femur shaft 6. Passing through the housing 10 is a screw having a wood thread, which is secured in the head 7 of the femur, and a machine thread which is located in the cup-like portion 15 of the housing 10. A spring 17 surrounds the screw and bears against a coneshaped abutment 18 formed in the cup-like portion 15 and against a nut 19 on the machine thread of the screw. The spring 17 serves to draw the severed surfaces of the bone together. An extension 11 of the housing 10 is provided for securing to the femur shaft 6.
