The lower blade 10 is provided with a rib 22 and a tooth 35 which, when the clamp is closed, engage with a groove. 24 and a hollow horn 36 respectively in the upper blade 12. Stops 44 are provided to prevent handles 20 from meeting when the clamp is in use. The stops may be replaced by toothed members (not shown) for holding the clamp in closed position. The clamping ends of the blades may be curved (not shown) and are made from stainless or carbon steel which is plated with silver or chromium. In gastrectomy the clamp is used with two similar clamps from which the secondary blade 26 is omitted, the horn 36 of one or both the second clamps engaging the slot 30 of the first clamp. A disc 40 on the horn 36 prevents it from escaping from the slot 30.
