Polymers of imino compounds and the manufacture thereof
Abstract
Abstract Compounds of formul <FORM:0696364/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0696364/IV (a)/2> where Y1 is an aliphatic radical containing a most 4 carbon atoms or an araliphatic hydrocarbon radical the aliphatic chain of which contains 2 carbon atoms; Y2 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by oxygen or sulphur atoms; X is a carboxylic salt, ester, amide or nitrile group; R2, R3 and R1 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals; and n is an integer from 2 to 47 are polymerized in presence of a sulphuric ester or sulphonic ester as a catalyst. The compounds of formula (1) may be the addition products of alkylene imines and unsaturated carboxylic acids (see Group IV (b)). The compounds of formula (2) may be obtained from alkylene imines and a : b -olefine carboxylic esters of polyhydric alcohols, see Specification 693,611 (Group IV (b)). The Specification contains many examples of compounds of formul (1) and (2) and of polymerization catalysts. The polymerization products may be used as adhesives, coating materials and cast or moulded bodies, e.g. anatomic models, and may be prepared on a sub-stratum, e.g. wood, paper, leather, glass- or textile-fibres. Some of the polymerization products are easily soluble, e.g. in methanol and water. In one example titanium dioxide and copper phthalocyanine is added to polymerized tris-(b -ethylene iminobutyric)-glycerol ester.ALSO:Compounds of formula <FORM:0696364/IV (b)/1> where Y1 is an aliphatic radical containing at most 4 carbon atoms or an araliphatic hydrocarbon radical the aliphatic chain of which contains 2 carbon atoms; X is a carboxylic salt, ester, amide or nitrile group; and R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals, are prepared by the addition of alkylene imines to the salts, esters, amides or nitriles of unsaturated carboxylic acids (e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, sorbic and cinnamic acids). The compounds polymerize in presence of sulphuric or sulphonic acid esters as catalysts (see Group IV (a)).
