Coating surfaces with polytetrafluoroethylene
Abstract
Abstract Metal surfaces are coated with a film of polytetrafluoroethylene by depositing thereon a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene particles from a suspension in a liquid medium, preferably aqueous, drying the resulting layer, heating it to sintering temperature and cooling to form an adherent film. The Provisional Specification describes the application of films of polytetrafluorethylene to ceramic or stone surfaces, and also deposition by electrophoresis, or by causing the surface and the polymer dispersion to take up opposite polarities by the use of anion and cation-active surface agents.ALSO:Metal surfaces are coated with a film of polytetrafluoroethylene by depositing thereon a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene particles from a suspension in a liquid medium, preferably aqueous, drying the resulting layer, heating it to sintering temperature, and cooling to form an adherent film, the polymer being deposited on a porous sintered metal surface, on a metal surface which has first been oxidized, or on a metal surface is protected during the heat treatment by an electrodeposited film of a noble metal such as silver, by an inert liquid, such as tetracresyl silicate, or by an inert gas such as nitrogen. The Provisional Specification describes the application of films of polytetrafluoroethylene to non-metallic surfaces such as ceramic or stone, and also deposition by electrophoresis, or by causing the surface and the polymer dispersion to take up opposite polarities by the use of anion and cation-active surface agents.
