Improvements in or relating to barriers and like guards
Abstract
Abstract 679,297. Fencing; gates. TUBULAR CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS, Ltd., APPLEBY, W. E., and HARRY, T. June 1, 1951 [June 20, 1950], No. 150406/50. Class 45 A portable barrier unit 10 comprises a substantially vertical portion 12 forming a guard and a horizontal or foot portion 11 extending therefrom at least on one side and in which the foot portion 11 on said one side is arranged so that a pressure applied to the guard portion 12 from the other side will tend to lift one end of the unit The guard portion 12 which has an outwardly bent top rail and a wire mesh 19 which is welded to a tubular surrounding frame is welded to the base portion 11 which is of substantially triangular shape and formed from a single tube. The foot portion is so connected to the guard portion that the greater portion. of it is located to one side, i.e., the outside of the guard, one side 21 being arranged at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to the plane of the guard and another side 22 at approximately 60 degrees so that the apex 23 of the base is closer to one end than the other, hence when a pressure is applied to the side of the guard opposite the apex 23, the barrier tends to tilt about the side 21. The remaining side 20 of the base is arranged parallel to the guard portion and on the other side of the guard portion than the apex 23 . Because of the bending of the top rail people leaning on the guard tend to stand on the side 20 and help to hold the barrier in place. The underside of the base portion 11 may be provided with earth engaging spikes 24 to prevent lateral movement of the barrier. The units are connected together by hook and eye connections 25, 26, the eye being on the end of the unit which is closer to the apex 23 so that when the end of the unit tends to lift owing to pressure on the barrier, the weight of the adjacent unit transmitted through the hook tends to hold it down. A gate may be provided in an assembly of units; this consists of a sole plate 36, Fig. 6, having two sockets 35 into which posts 31, 32 fit. These posts have eyes 33, those on one post engaging the hooks of a unit 10 and those of the other being connected to the eyes of another unit 10 by nuts and bolts 34. The gate, which is hinged to the post 32, is of tubular construction. The unit 10 may be modified so that the base unit and the outside frame of the guard unit are made from a single length of tube. The wire mesh panel may be attached by clips instead of by welding.
