Improved electrical soldering iron
Abstract
Abstract 671,272. Electric soldering-irons. McLELLAN & CO., PTY., Ltd., W. J. April 28, 1950, No. 10502/50. Class 39(iii) An electric soldering-iron comprises a handle 10, a casing 12 secured thereto, a bit 16 fixed to the casing 12, a plunger 17 capable of reciprocation within the casing 12 and having attached at the end nearer the bit 16 an element 26, e.g. of carbon, and a manually operable switch member, e.g. a ring .22, slidable on the handle 10 and operatively connected with the plunger 17, which may therefore be moved longitudinally to bring the element 26 in contact with the bit 16 and there generate heat. Sliding the ring 22 . downwardly forces a projection 20 of the plunger 17 downwards against a spring 25 surrounding the plunger. When the element 26 contacts the bit 16 the circuit is completed from lead 13 through a lug 30 on the plunger 17, through the element 26 and bit 16, the casing 12, a plug 11 with a connection 29, and back to the other lead 13. The plunger 17 is insulated from the casing 12 by spacers 18, 23 and a sleeve 24. The element 26 fits in a holder 27 which screws in the end 28 of the plunger 17. The spring 25 automatically retracts the element 26 upon releasing the ring 22.
