Improvements in or relating to heat exchange apparatus
Abstract
Abstract 668,475. Plate heat-exchangers. HUET, A. June 14, 1949 [June 18, 1948], No. 15780/49. Class 64(iii) Relates to heat-exchangers of the kind comprising a group of hollow plates 1, disposed parallel or substantially parallel to each other and spaced apart within a casing 2-6, one fluid flowing over the plates and a second fluid flowing through the plates and the walls of the plates having undulations extending transversely to the flow of the fluids. According to the invention, the undulations in the walls of the hollow plates effect local variations in the crosssectional areas of the undulated flow paths for both of the fluids and thus effect local variations in the pressure of each of the said fluids as well as in the speed of flow. The undulations 22 may be periodic, aperiodic, symmetrical or assymmetrical. In the form shown each plate is provided internally with baffles 13, 14 defining a tortuous fluid path X and constituted by straight depressions formed on each side of the plate and welded together along the line of contact. Readily detachable or hingedly mounted baffles 17, 18 between the plates form a tortuous path Y for the fluid flowing over the plates between inlet and outlet headers 9, 10. Headers 7, 8 connect the fluid flow spaces within the plates. Fluid deflecting vanes 20, 21, Fig. 3, are provided in the inlet headers 7, 9 respectively. The hollow plates each comprise two plates pressed to shape and welded together at their edges except at the location of the headers 7, 8 and the plate walls may be provided with opposed dimples welded together at their points of contact.
