Abstract

Abstract 652,810. Moulding corrugated rubber tubes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and GARSTANG, T. Aug. 18, 1948, No. 21758. [Class 87 (ii)] Corrugated rubber tube is made by fitting a rubber tube 17 over a perforated mandrel 7 on which the ends of the tube are sealed by end clamps 18, 19, the corrugations being moulded by internal expansion of the tube against slidable intermediate moulding clamps 20. Two part end clamps 18, 19 are supported by guide bars 4 and are adapted to be assembled around the rubber tube 17 on the mandrel 7 to bring the ends of the tube into sealing contact with the mandrel while permitting the tube to slide along the mandrel. The tube is fitted over the mandrel, the collars 13, 14 are slipped over and along the mandrel until they meet the ends of the tube, and set-screw 16 of collar 14 is tightened to fix the collar to the mandrel. The clamps 18, 19 and 20 are then spaced along the tube, spacer bars (not shown) being used if necessary, and the assembly of mandrel, tube and clamps is then placed in the apparatus, Fig. II. In the assembled position the clamps 20 grip the tube 17 without preventing axial movement of the tube on the mandrel, and the end clamps 18, 19 form a seal between the tube and mandrel to allow the tube to be inflated. The rigid tube 10 is then placed in position and compressed air or water is admitted through inlet 11 and holes 12 to slightly inflate the tube 17 and form bulges 41, Fig. VI. The screw 5 is then rotated to move the tube 10, rest 8 and collar 14 towards the headstock 1. The mandrel slides through the collar. 13 which, however, retains the tube 17, and the clamps are moved into contact to form the corrugations, Fig. VII. The set-screw 15 of collar 13 is then tightened and the assembly of mandrel, tube and clamps is removed to a vulcanizing chamber.
