Improvements in or relating to appliances for the prevention of horn growth in horned animals
Abstract
Abstract 641,034. Electric searing appliances. OLIVER PELL CONTROL, Ltd., OLIVER, G. F. N., COOPER-STEWART ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and ROWE, J. E. April 23, 1948, No. 11273, [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group VI] A device for preventing the growth of horns in horned animals comprises a metal bit, shaped to fit over the hbrn bud and electrically heated and thermostatically controlled. A copper bit 11, of circular cross section and having a central recess 16, is heated by an element 12, the circuit to which includes an adjustable contact 34 and a spring contact 36, the supporting blade of which is controlled through a push rod 23 by a bi-metallic strip 22. Increasing temperature causes the strip 22 to bend towards the left and press on the rod 23 so as to open the contacts. The temperature at which the circuit is broken may be set by appropriately adjusting the screw contact 34. The device is enclosed in tubular sheaths 17, 40, the latter being heat-insulated by a layer of lagging 46, and there is an outer tubular gripping member 47 spaced from the casing 40. It is proposed that the device should be operated either from a 12 volt battery or through a step down transformer from the mains. To provide for animals of various sizes and ages, tubular extension pieces may be clamped on to the bit, see Fig. 2 (not shown).
