Improvements in or relating to valves
Abstract
Abstract 621,142. Valve closure members. BEESTON, J. P. July 9, 1946, No. 20491. [Class 135] A rotary plug valve having an oblique controlling edge which co-operates with a corresponding oblique edge at the intersection of the main bore of the body with an enlarged portion thereof such that in one position of the plug, when its oblique edge is wholly within the main bore, the valve is closed and on rotary movement therefrom, when the oblique edges of the plug and the body cross each other, the valve is opened. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the valve body is formed with a main bore 13 which intersects at an oblique edge 18 an enlarged conical bore 15, the axis AA of which is offset from that of the bore and which is provided with a branch 11. Within the body is rotatably and slidably housed a plug 19 formed with an oblique controlling edge 20 and a groove 23 for a sealing ring 24. The plug is operable by an integral stem 21 extending through a packing ring 25. On rotating the plug to a position where the edges 18, 20 are substantially parallel to each other, the valve is closed with possibly slight leakage which is overcome when the plug is moved axially and the ring 24 engages with the bore 13. In a modification, the plug is in the form of a cylindrical shell open at its inner end and provided with a V-notch on its cylindrical surface which coacts with the edge 18. In another arrangement, the cylindrical shell is extended and formed with a groove 42, Fig. 7, which engages a pin 43. On clockwise rotation of the plug from the position shown, the pin travels along the helical portion of the groove to fully seal the valve whilst on anticlockwise rotation therefrom the pin travels in the circumferential groove to bring the notch into register with the branch 11. In a further modification, the branch 11 is replaced by a bore in the stem 21 which communicates with the casing by way of a V-notch.
