Adhesive compositions
Abstract
Abstract An adhesive comprises a diene/vinyl pyridine copolymer and from 10-90 per cent of a phenol-aldehyde resole. Dienes specified are butadiene 1 : 3, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene and piperylene and vinyl pyridines specified are alpha and gamma vinyl pyridines and homologues thereof. The resole may be prepared from formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, chloral or furfural, and phenol, cresols, xylenols, naphthols, diphenylolmethane, diphenylolpropane, chlorophenols, tertiary butyl phenol, tertiary amyl phenol, catechol, resorcinol, phloroglucinol, orcinol, hydroquinone or quebracho extract, and in the presence of the copolymer. Butadiene or isoprene and alpha vinyl pyridine are copolymerized in bulk, solvent or aqueous dispersion, and in the latter sodium or potassium oleate, sodium resinate, formaldehyde/sodium naphthalene-sulphonate product, potassium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide, potassium ferricyanide, sodium bisulphite or hydrosulphite, lauryl, octyl or decyl mercaptans and xanthogen disulphides may be present. The copolymer may also contain other vinyl monomers such as styrene, vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl naphthalene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or diethyl fumarate. The copolymer latex may be stabilized with a phenyl - alpha - naphthylamine/diphenylamine mixture. The adhesive may also contain water, toluene, toluene/ethyl alcohol, chlorinated hydrocarbons, sodium butyl thiocarbonate, sulphur, carbon black, and zinc oxide. Rubber and synthetic rubbers are bonded to metal or fibrous material by applying the composition and heating. Vulcanization, which may be simultaneous with the bonding is achieved with zinc oxide, channel black, phenyl alpha-and beta-naphthylamine, sulphur, stearic acid, pine tar, light process oil, mercaptobenzothiazole and N-cyclohexyl benzthiazyl sulphenamide. Specification 339,255, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
