An improved device for compensating tension in control cables
Abstract
Abstract 590,962. Dashpots. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., LEATHER, G. B., and PEKARSKY, L. April 25, 1945, No. 10436. [Class 108 (iii)] In a device for compensating changes in tension in aircraft control cables of the kind described in Specification 570,015 comprising a link interposed in a cable and capable of extending against spring loading and means damping its extension which can be put out of action automatically on release of tension, a valve 2 is provided which is normally open to permit fluid flow in either direction under more or less free extension or compression of the spring loading means 12 but is adapted to be moved automatically on to its seating 9 on the application of a suddenly applied operating load. The device as shown comprises a cylinder 1 and a piston valve 2 which is loosely mounted on, and has limited axial movement relative to a piston rod 3 against a spring 10, a surface 8 on the piston being adapted to engage a valve seating 9 on an extended portion of the rod 3 to prevent fluid flow from below to above the piston. Under a static load the spring 10 maintains the valve 8, 9 open so that the load is carried by the spring 12. When an operating load is applied to the piston rod 3, friction between the piston 2 and cylinder bore causes closing of the valve 8, 9 and the load is then sustained by the fluid beneath the piston. A compensating spring 16 and piston 15 allow for change in fluid volume due to expansion leakage &c. The piston rod may be calibrated to give a visual indication of the cable tension.
