Improved apparatus for spectrographic analysis
Abstract
Abstract 584,506. Spectrographs. ARNOLD, C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). May 31, 1944, No. 10465. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL] In an apparatus for comparing .the emission or absorption spectra of two substances, a beam of radiation from each substance has isolated therefrom a band of desired wave-length, the energies of these beams being converted into electric currents proportional to the intensities of the beams, the currents being amplified and their ratio determined by potentiometric means and recorded - automatically. As shown, a beam of infra red radiation from a source 1 passes through two cells 2A, 2B containing the two samples and the resultant beams are reflected into a monochromator 3 in such a manner that they lie one above the other in the same plane. The monochromator contains a prism and an adjustable mirror whereby any selected waveband may pass through an exit slit and fall on thermo-couples.4A and 4B. The currents produced by the thermo-couples are amplified by the units 5A and 5B and their ratio compared in a potentiometer 6, to which may be attached a recorder 40 of the type described in Specification 584,507, having a device producing fiduciary marks corresponding to known wave- Lengths. Details are given of the amplification unit, Fig. 3 (not shown), the monochromator, Fig. 2 (not shown), wave-band selector, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the device for producing the fiduciary marks, Fig. 5 (not shown). Absorption spectra in the visible and ultra-violet regions may be obtained by the substitution of photo-electric detectors for the thermo-couples shown.
