Abstract

Abstract 570,087. Artificial lines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DUNHAM, C. R. May 26, 1943, No. 8451. [Class 40 (iii)] An artificial line having distributed capacitance inductance comprises a number of coaxial tubular conductors 8, 16 of progressively increasing cross - section, all connected together, with intervening helical windings 11, 18 also connected together. The arrangement simulates a co-axial line, the helical windings acting as the inner conductor and the tubular conductors as the outer, and can be used in known manner for the production of rectangular pulses or for introducing delay. In the construction shown, the tubular conductors 8, 16 are sheets of copper foil and the windings 11, 18 comprise three copper wires and one cotton thread laid side by side, the copper sheets and windings being separated by layers of paper and the whole being mounted on an insulating tube 6, which in the example given is 4 inches long. The windings are preferably connected in series, but if a line of high capacitance is required a parallel connection may be desirable. The tubes may be of other than circular cross-section, and the interior of the tube 6 may be used to house other apparatus.
