Abstract

Abstract 569,514. Making turbine blades and other headed articles. ARON. H. Nov. 22, 1943, No. 19522. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging; rolling.-In the manufacture of forgings, from stock of simple cross-section, with a root or head portion of greater crosssection than the non-symmetrical stem portion, stock of cross-section the same as or slightly greater than that of the stem, is provided with a symmetrically disposed head by upsetting, the head being of sufficient size to work to the desired form in forging-dies or segmental rolls. As applied to producing a turbine blade, stock 14 corresponding to the blade portion 12 is upset to produce a head 15, Fig. 2, by a ram 21 forcing the stock between electrode jaws 16 against an abutment 20. The blade is then tapered between dies 25, 26, Fig. 3, and the root 11 is finished to shape and correct location with regard to the blade in closed dies 29, Fig. 4. In a modification, the blade and root may be brought to finished form between segmental rolls. When a blade of the form shown in Fig. 11 is required, the stock is upset at each end.
