Measurement of temperature
Abstract
Abstract 545,832. Measuring temperatures. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 10, 1940, No. 17496. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 40 (i)] Temperature is measured with the aid of a pair of crystalcontrolled oscillators of which one is kept at a constant temperature and the other is influenced by the temperature to be measured. The outputs are mixed and the beat frequency is observed by means of headphones and recorded in a recording frequency meter. The detecting oscillator may be linked with the rest of the apparatus by wire or wireless. In the apparatus shown, in which a casing 3 has a cement joint with the wall of a borebole, the location of the cement, which gives out heat while setting is ascertained by lowering the oscillator 16 into the tube and observing the depth at which there is a sudden change in the beat note produced by mixing current of the frequency received from the oscillator 16 with that produced by a thermostatically controlled oscillator 11.
