Improvements in or relating to electric plug and socket couplings
Abstract
Abstract 545,602. two-part couplings. JACKSON, D., and PYE, Ltd. Oct. 10, 1940, No. 15130. [Class 38 (i)] A plug - and - socket coupling has the insulating support for the contact elements mounted in a casing made of stamped or pressed sheet metal. The plug member consists of an outer shell 11, Fig. 3, with a mounting flange 14 and an inner liner 10 with a flange 12 against which the insulating discs 3 ... 5 are held by a spring ring 16 secured by the ends 17 of a stirrup clip 18 or by tangs entering slots 20. The plug contacts 6 are of sheet metal and have cross bars 7 located between the discs 3, 5 in apertures in the disc 4. Supply leads are soldered in eyes 15. The socket member has a shell 24, Fig. 6, flanged at 25 to .retain discs 26, 27 held in place by a ring '31 and, if required, a backing plate 36. The sockets 28 are of sheet metal with splayed tips held between the discs 26, 27. Supply leads are soldered in eyes 29. The part 24a of the shell 24 has a flange 44 forming a swivel joint with a channel 45, being fixed with the cable inlet 38 at the desired angle by bending the flange 44 where it is exposed by gaps 45a in the channel 45. A removable cover 37 forms half of the cable inlet and is retained by a band clip 41 and by a tang 40 entering a slot in the part 24a. A collar 42 grips the cable sheath. The clip 18 secures the plug and socket members together and is adjust-- able to correspond with the angular position of the part 24a. The contact assembly may be sealed with varnish, or a rubber disc compressed between rigid outer discs may be employed.
