Abstract

Abstract 539,247. Diaphragm pumps. CHALMERS, R. A., and TECALEMIT, Ltd. March 13,1940, No. 4715. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A diaphragm pump for liquid or gaseous fluids comprises a chamber 9 in which are reciprocated two or more flexible diaphragms wherein one side of one diaphragm 37 is in communication with a suction pipe 5 communicating with said chamber, and one side of another diaphragm 31 is in communication with an outlet pipe 12 communicating with said chamber, each diaphragm being associated with means for causing fluid to be transferred around its outer edge from one side to the other thereof, the transfer around the diaphragms taking place successively. The diaphragms 37, 31 are reciprocated in opposite directions from a shaft 19 by means of inner and outer eccentrics 21, 20 and solid and hollow connecting rods 33, 27 passing through glands 40, 38, the diaphragms bearing against smooth lower and upper curved seats 8, 10 respectively. For varying the capacity of the pump, the phase difference can be changed at will by constructing the inner eccentric sheave in two relatively rotatable parts 21a, 21b, Fig. 2, which are locked in any desired relative angular position by means of a bolt 43 and an arcuate slot 46. To avoid undue loading of the diaphragms, the phase difference may be varied automatically by constructing the inner eccentric sheave in two relatively rotatable parts 21c, 21d, Fig. 4, connected together by toggle links 50, 52 controlled by a spring 55. In a modification, the diaphragms are co-axially above and below a radially acting cam and are returned by spring action, the inlet connection being on one side of the pump casing. Alternatively, the axes of the diaphragms may be parallel.
